Background

CSS is a graphic design language used to define and create the presentation of a structured document written in a markup language. It is widely used today to establish the visual design of web documents.

Created by Håkon Wium Lie on October 10, 1994. At the same time, Lie was working with Tim Berners-Lee at CERN. As HTML grew, it came to encompass a wide variety of design capabilities to meet the demands of web designers. This evolution gave designers greater control over the appearance of the site, albeit with the cost of more complex HTML. Improving presentation capabilities on the web was a topic of interest for many in the web communities.

Lie’s proposal was presented at the ‘Mosaic and the web’ conference in Chicago in 1994. And again with Bert Bos in 1995.

Each web browser uses a rendering engine to display web pages, and CSS support is not exactly the same in all rendering engines. Since browsers do not apply CSS uniformly, many browser-specific programming techniques have been developed.

Uses Cases

Typically, CSS is used to group, animate, specify sizes and filters, and color elements on a website. However, there are also individuals who take their knowledge further and create drawings solely with CSS.
